News Post
[It's the nightly news, and dueling coverage for the day is on. There's a Ryozanpaku instructor (visibly nursing their left side) talking to a reporter outside the school's gates.]
"No no no, absolutely not. Any rumors our sign has been stolen is just that - rumors. We took the sign down for standard maintenance and detailed cleaning. As well, there were concerns that in it's current place it was at risk of vandalism from the street from jealous detractors. The sign is of course still in our possess..."
[The feed cuts out there.
And is replaced by footage of the sign, hanging on a blank wall. In front of the sign is a table with numerous weapons pierced through it.
Sitting at the table, is a large, hooded figure.
Wearing a Hannya mask.]
Lying?
Not a good look for such a prestiguous school. Especially a martial arts school? The sign is sacred, you know. Just having it taken is embarrassing enough, but lying about it?
Were you going to replace it quietly and hoped no one noticed? That's pretty sad. You don't have the integrity of even a local Shotokai dojo, do you?
Of course, you have a lot of secrets, don't you.
[He picks up one of the swords, angling it's blade towards the camera, and showing a clear etching of Ryozanpaku's logo in the blade.]
You sure have a lot of weapons hanging around in the school, don't you? Even university Kendo clubs don't practice with actual blades.
Even Chanbara movies don't use real swords. But this...
[He swings it down. The table is cut clean through and collapses.]
Has quite an edge, doesn't it? That's not the only secret you've got either, is it? I did a little digging.
Isn't your school both junior high and high?
That's age thirtreen to eighteen.. five years away from your family. Not that unreasonable. A lot of military schools in Japan do that.
But why has your star duelist, Isao Kachidoki, been there since he was seven? He has. The records might not be cheerfully given, but they're there, and public. Ten years is an awful long time, especially for a kid. I wonder what kind of environment he had? Although from his behavior, we can certainly make a guess, can't we. I mean, there has to be a reason why you're pointedly avoiding police investigating your school grounds, huh?
And that's really it, isn't it? You can criticize Ryozanpaku. You can call the kid's thugs, or violent, or any number of other names.
But at the end of the day, kids can only do what they're taught. Kids don't have any control over their own lives, not really. What you put into a kid will reflect the person they become. Not even the strongest, most well meaning kid can fight against that kind of environment.
All of Ryozanpaku's students are innocent.
The only person who isn't, is you.
[The hood and mask come off, and Jinn is standing there.]
Ryozan Godagawa.
If you want your sign back - and I assure you, this is Ryozanpaku's actual sign - you'll duel me at the dueling festival and win. All the preparations have already been made and the event is cleared with the promoters. All you have to do is accept.
If I'm really washed-up, it shouldn't be hard, should it?
